The Cornaro (Κορνάρο in Greek) are the current royal family of Cyprus. The current queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro, gained the throne after the sudden death of her husband, king Jean II de Poitiers-Lusignan, and her son and heir to the Cypriote throne, James III. The Cornaro are an important patrician family of Venice, and have always been influentian in Cypriote politics, as the island is a key node of the Venetian trade network in the Mediterranean: as they managed to gain the kingdom of Cyprus however, they are now forced to balance the complex political situation of Venice with the administration of their newfound domain.
