"Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro."
"Freedom is not worth being sold for all the gold in the world."
Ragusa or Dubrovnik is the southernmost major city in Dalmazia, and also the only self governing city in that region; in fact, the greatest pride of the city is its own liberty and independence. Within its walls lives a mixed Italian and Serbo-Croatian population, governed by a merchant oligarchy which created a mercantile republic capable of competing with Venice, with trade posts all over the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. It was also thanks to the wealth gained by sea trade that the city could become famous for its gorgeous architectural beauty, and also impose its influence over the neighboring villages of Trebigne and Sabbioncello and the island of Meleda.
