Tūnus or Tunisia is a large, hilly and arid region located southeast of Sicilia, across the Mediterranean. This area is subject to the rule of the bey of Tunisi, the largest city of the region, but has seen notable penetration from Italian merchants, especially in the coast cities of Bizerte (Biserta), Sifaks (Safachia), Mahdia (Madia), in addition to the Genoese colony of Tabarca and the island of Gerba, held to be a free trade zone by the beys.
