Iron: The Story of the Man in the Iron Mask, commonly shortened to simply Iron, is a 1986 American historical drama film. Covering the life of Monitor from 1884 to his disappearance in 1891, it is one of the first major films to depict Monitor as a hero.
Though it was highly controversial upon release due to its portrayal of Monitor and Merrimack, Iron received widespread critical acclaim and was a box-office success. Commonly cited as one of the best films of the 1980s, its influence is seen as a major reason for Monitor's exoneration in the eyes of the public.
